Some members of the college student co-operative living in Seoul, Korea find that their quest for individuality is thwarted by their commitment to the group. The following article covers the background story of one such member, Chang Tae Suk (played by Lee Jae Hoon). The members of the co-op live together in one house and look after one another. They are required to share all they have with each other, including food and money. This egalitarian lifestyle initially seems attractive to Chang Tae Suk who came from a poor family, but soon he discovers that others are unwilling to share with him too readily. He also realizes he does not fit in with them so well either as most study science while his preference is for art. As he tours around Seoul with his girlfriend he learns more about the other members and through his experiences gradually changes, but only to the degree that he succeeds in having them to share with him. A review by "Time Out" newspaper notes that the film has "memorable performances" and that Lee (Hwang Jang Lee) is wonderfully stoic as he plays "the initiator of bullying". A reviewer for "Screen Daily" describes Hwang as having a "thoroughly grounded performance" and praises the film's "searching theme" which has been explored by other filmmakers before, particularly Harold Pinter. It concludes, however, that it does not always find its way into its characters' actions or thoughts.
The opening scene of "Mud" is shot in the Chungdahm Bridge, Seoul. The bridge spans the Han River and features a small, traditional Korean neighborhood.
At the 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards, "Mud" won four awards including Best New Actor for Hyeon-ok (played by Shin Min Ah) and New Actress for Shin Min-ah.
Film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports that 100% of reviews are positive.
A number of reviews cite similarities with another film by director Hong Sang-soo, "The Day He Arrives", which also deals with three co-operative housemates living together to form an artistic community called 'the group'. The similarities include the same theme being explored, the use of Chungdahm Bridge, Seoul, in each film's opening scene, and Lee Jae-hoon playing similar roles in each film. The following are some of the other films referenced by reviewers.
The film was released on VOD on 6 November 2018. It was released in cinemas on 5 December 2018.
